Hate Crime Leads To Death of 17-Year-Old Girl in Georgia

21-Year-Old Marc Wilson, A Biracial Man Accused of Murder

Statesboro — In a recent case of racial hatred, 21-year-old Marc Wilson was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. A couple of days later, Wilson turned himself in to face murder charges from an incident in late June 2020. A pickup truck of four white kids attempted to run Wilson’s vehicle off the road while yelling racial slurs. Wilson was on his way to get food from the drive-through when he spotted a car tailing him. Wilson’s then-girlfriend Emma Rigdon said that Haley Hutcheson, who was in the passenger seat, had followed them. The driver, 18-year-old Mason Glisson, admitted to driving impaired but denied attempting to run Wilson and his girlfriend off the road.

In contrast, three others attempted to chase Wilson and Rigdon through several traffic lights on the Statesboro bypass. The truck swerved into Wilson’s lane several times while the young white men inside waved while screaming racial slurs.

The pickup truck kept trying to hit them from behind or bypassing on either side of our car. Similar to Ahmaud Arbery’s case, white men in a pickup truck were chased down before being fatally shot. However, Wilson fired his gun as a warning while hollering for them to back off while defending himself and his girlfriend. According to Georgia law, you can use deadly force when faced with imminent threats. The court did not apply this to Wilson’s case.

One other man has been charged in connection to the case: Luke Conley, one of this week’s witnesses, and an obstruction charge against him. Conley claims he was simply a passenger in the car where Hutcheson died. He took the stand Wednesday but invoked his 5th amendment rights not to answer, which WTOC found strange given previous charges such as DUI (arrested one month before) plus hit-and-run accident.

In a rare move, the judge ordered defense attorney Francys Johnson to be held in contempt for failing to hand over evidence. The case involved an issue with handing back notebooks by mistake, and Johnson refused to give the notebooks back to the prosecution but wanted the notebook to be added to court records. Defense attorneys moved to have the proceeding judge removed from the case.

A bail hearing took place back in August 2020; however, he was denied bail. Wilson was considered a flight risk even though he has ties to the county and turned himself in. Allegedly, his girlfriend has since changed her original story. Rallies were held to support Wilson’s release from jail, and it is clear that mainstream media did not cover his story.

Change.org has posted a petition requesting the release of Wilson from his incarceration and calling for a public inquiry. Into what seems to be a likely case in systematic racism, showing how black people are discriminated against in the justice system.
